MOTIVATED PhD STUDENT

Multimedia Lab (MMLab, multimedialab.elis.ugent.be) is a research group within Ghent University, Faculty of Engineering and Architecture, Department of Electronics and Information Systems (ELIS, www.elis.ugent.be).
MMLab was founded in 2001. This lab has a wide range of activities, including fundamental/basic research, applied research, and contract-based research with industrial partners. Besides, MMLab is doing scientific consultancy for both industrial and governmental partners and is one of the founding research groups of IBBT.
The main research topics that are dealt with by MMLab can be summarized as follows:
• Video coding and compression
• Image/video processing and analysis
• Multimedia content adaptation
• Metadata technology
• Gaming technology
• Standardization in the domain of multimedia applications and systems
The activities of MMLab in basic/fundamental research (e.g., development of new algorithms for multimedia coding/decoding) are at the basis of other, rather application-driven, research activities (e.g., exploitation of scalable video compression in iDTV applications).

MOTIVATED PhD STUDENT (m/f)
Job description
• You will participate in a research project on the optimization of automatic video surveillance by means of multimodal video analysis (funded by Ghent University) and possible other projects in the same research field (funded by the European Union, national funding, and/or industrial partners).
• You will develop new concepts and applications in the field of expertise of the research group Multimedia Lab.
• You will occasionally assist in courses and laboratories related to your research, develop practical exercises and/or supervise students for MSc projects.
Profile
• You are a dynamic person.
• You have a Master degree, preferably in Computer Science, Informatics, Electronics, or Mathematics.
• You are interested in multimedia applications in general and to perform research in the context of a multimedia-related research project with the goal of obtaining a PhD degree in Computer Science Engineering.
• You have in-depth knowledge of at least one of the following computer languages: C, C++, C#, Java, PHP.
• You are able to work independently and accurately.
• You have good communication skills, written as well as oral.
• You have a very good knowledge of the English language (written and oral).
• Occasionally, you are willing to work during weekends or evenings.
Offer
• A young, dynamic and stimulating work environment.
• A 4-year contract as full time scientific employee at Ghent University.
• The opportunity to obtain a PhD.
• High market value when leaving for the industry or public sector.
• Start date: as soon as possible.
• End date: Start date + 48 months, no later than 31/10/2015
• The salary depends on your (scientific) working experience; the initial salary is minimum € 1.760,00 per month.
